When looking back on the inaugural season of the World Cup Cody Ware Next Gen vehicle, two NASCAR Cup Series drivers were unable to compete due to injury. There are just two drivers, not three: Cody Ware, who was hurt on September 25 at Texas Motor Speedway, does not consider himself in the same category as Kurt Busch and Alex Bowman, both of whom sustained concussions at World Cup Cody Ware.

“It was obviously a difficult time there,” Ware tells RACER. “Obviously, Kurt was still out, and Bowman sat out after Texas, and I became a focal point of a lot of the debate that was going on, but it was distinct instances.”

“What everyone else is concerned about is the stiffness of these automobiles’ back ends and how it affects concussions and head injuries.” World Cup Cody Ware, my accident would have been atrocious whether it had occurred in a Gen 6 automobile, a Gen 5 car, or a sports car. You’re going to have troubles if you hit a wall like that.”

On lap 168 at Texas, a loose racing car eventually broke on Ware, slamming him into the Turn 4 wall. The crash smashed the front of his Ford Mustang, causing the throttle to get stuck. Ware was then along for the ride as his vehicle returned to the circuit and collided with the wall on pit road.

Ware was diagnosed with an impaction fracture, two ruptured ligaments, and two hyperextended ligaments in his ankle. He arrived to Talladega World Cup Cody Ware the next week with a walking boot and crutches but was cleared to race, which he completed without incident.

Ware told RACER and Fox Sports in the Talladega garage that the safety equipment did its job and that the incident might have been much worse at the World Cup Cody Ware. Ware did not sustain any injuries, including a concussion.

Since then, NASCAR has confirmed to RACER that Ware’s hit is the greatest frontal impact recorded since the sanctioning began an accident database in 2011. When Ware struck the wall, he was traveling at 160 mph.

Ware believes his experience differs from Busch and Bowman’s in that it was classified as a ‘catastrophic incident.’ It’s the kind of collision the NASCAR industry envisioned when designing the Next Gen vehicle of World Cup Cody Ware. Smaller hits, including rear-end impacts in the instance of Busch and Bowman, have been a major concern for drivers.

“I believe the vehicle was constructed — particularly after Ryan Newman’s incident in 2020 — to let drivers to withstand these crashes and walk away and continue race,” Ware adds. “I believe that was shown for me the following weekend at Talladega.”

During a state of the sport talk Friday at Phoenix Raceway, NASCAR COO Steve O’Donnell said that the top concern has been safeguarding drivers from catastrophic events for World Cup Cody Ware. From then, the sport realized that additional issues (such as minor impacts) needed to be addressed.

Ware was using one crutch the week of the Charlotte Roval, which he did not participate in and where some speculated that three NASCAR drivers would miss races due to the new chassis. Ware didn’t race because he was aware of the brutality of the Roval and knew his ankle couldn’t handle it. Ware chose not to run even though he was cleared to do so.

Ware was able to walk without assistance by the race weekend in Las Vegas. Then, approximately a month after his accident, Ware believed he was finally walking normally. Ware is around 95% of the way through the season and is still undergoing physical treatment.

Ware’s injuries were caused by the initial hit, a head-on collision with an exterior wall that smashed the nose of his automobile. World Cup Cody Ware realized immediately away that his right foot was “messed up pretty severely,” but everything else occurred so rapidly that Ware couldn’t grasp what else was wrong.

“We still don’t have a definite explanation as to why I believe my foot was hurt,” Ware explains. “What we believe occurred was that my feet had nowhere to go in that high-G collision due to the floor-mounted pedals.” As a result, my right foot became trapped between the brake and the gas pedal, or between the gas pedal and the leg brace that runs beside you in the automobile.

“We’re not sure, but it’s not the fault of the Next Gen automobile for World Cup Cody Ware.” It’s simply a question of various pedals and cockpits, and it’s not necessarily a failure or flaw with the Next Gen. It was simply something that, because of the vehicle’s design in comparison to what we ran with the previous car, might not have occurred.”

Despite the fact that he was already in agony from the foot injury, Ware claims that the impact from the pit wall was harsher.

“It’s a concrete wall, not a SAFER barrier,” Ware explains. “Aside from my foot, I felt OK.” I was out of breath, but then again, who wouldn’t be after a 50-plus G collision on the wall? So, other from being out of breath, nothing else about my body indicated that I was harmed or out of it from the initial impact.

“However, the second strike was undoubtedly more physically uncomfortable due to the absence of a SAFER barrier with the throttle hanging.” I didn’t have any means of slowing the automobile down before the second hit. It was certainly not enjoyable to be a passenger in your own automobile.”

In the days after his collision, Ware examined all of the crash data with his crew and NASCAR, as well as his safety equipment. With addition to feeling that everything did its job and he was as safe as possible, Ware determined that even in the old vehicle, he wasn’t going to go away unscathed and could have just exchanged one injury for another.

“Obviously, having the impaction fracture and some injured ligaments from the crash stinks,” Ware recalls, “but I believe with the previous vehicle, I would have been sitting out of concussion protocol and stuff like that.” “I believe the accident might have been much worse.” According to the statistics I’ve reviewed with NASCAR, it was one of, if not the, hardest G force and delta (numbers) we’ve ever seen in the last decade or so.

“I believe walking away from that and being in the vehicle seven days later is a credit to the resilience of these automobile at the World Cup Cody Ware.The automobile was built to take a big impact, and I took one of those big knocks. I was obviously on crutches and laboring at Talladega, but I was still able to compete in the race days after such a serious crash. We may not have seen it in the Gen6 automobile.”

Ware does not deny that the automobile has flaws and agrees with the objections of his fellow drivers only because it performed its job in his collision at the World Cup Cody Ware. However, Ware said that communication between NASCAR and the garage has increased in recent weeks and that things are being done.

What Ware wants to emphasize from his incident is where NASCAR stands in terms of safety with catastrophic strikes. His foot may have been harmed, but Ware stated he had no bruises or concussion and passed all the tests to continue racing.

“I’ve had worse impacts in less safe automobiles and been stunned, confused, and out of it for a while,” he adds. “Again, just talking about my experience, I’m generally pleased. It meant everything to me to be able to complete the season and prepare for next year. It was difficult to sit out the road course, but finishing the season with my sponsors and team has been a joy after all that.”
